What is Afanix 40 mg?

Afanix 40mg (Afatinib) is a cancer treatment for advanced or metastatic NSCLC with non-resistant EGFR mutations or platinum-based chemotherapy resistance. It  is available as a dimaleate salt under the brand name Gilotrif Label from Boehringer Ingelheim. It is used as the first-line treatment for metastatic non-small cell lung cancer patients with common EGFR. Making it the first FDA-approved oncology product from Boehringer Ingelheim. Afanix 40mg is made by Bangladeshi renowned pharmaceutical Beacon pharmaceutical.

Indications- Why Afanix 40 mg is used?

Afanix 40mg is used as a monotherapy for treating adult patients with metastatic (NSCLC) with non-resistant EGFR mutations. The US FDA approved a supplemental New Drug Application for Afatinib in January 2018, including data on three additional EGFR mutations: L861Q, G719X, and S768I. The drug is indicated for patients with non-resistant EGFR mutations detected by FDA-approved tests.

  • First-line treatment of patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumors have non-resistant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations as detected by an FDA-approved test.
  • Treatment of patients with metastatic squamous NSCLC progressing after platinum-based chemotherapy.

How does Afanix 40 mg (Afatinib) work?

Afanix 40mg is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor that blocks the tyrosine kinase activity of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and HER2 proteins, which are crucial for cell growth, differentiation, and survival.

It works by binding to the kinase domain of EGFR and HER2, preventing them from autophosphorylating and activating downstream signaling pathways. Afanix 40mg is particularly effective against NSCLC tumors with specific mutations in the EGFR gene, making the EGFR protein more active and sensitive to inhibition. It also inhibits the tyrosine kinase activity of HER4, another member of the ErbB family. Afanix 40mg’s anti-cancer effects include inhibiting tumor cell growth and division, promoting tumor cell death, preventing tumor angiogenesis, and inhibiting tumor cell invasion and metastasis. It is a highly effective treatment for NSCLC patients, but potential side effects should be considered.
